Waste gas treatmentt at an explosive manufacturing plant

IWe installed a biofilter and wet scrubberor the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odour that are emitted from the coating/painting line at an explosive manufacturer.

More about the project

During the painting process of large-caliber ammunition, volatile substances such as acetone, toluene, butyl acetate, and xylene are released. Due to the high concentration of VOC emissions in the exhaust air, which exceeded the permissible limit of 50 mg/mÂł, it was necessary to implement a system with a minimum capture efficiency of 70–80%. Biofiltration was selected as the most suitable technology due to its low operating costs, making it an environmentally and economically advantageous solution.

We manufactured and installed a packed bed wet scrubber with to regulate the moisture balance of the biofilter bed and remove or decrease the non-biodegradable or semi-biodegradable compounds and eliminate any particulates (PM) from the polluted gas stream. Our scrubber has a body made of UV-resistant HDPE (high density polyethylene), the surface is smooth, UV‑radiation, weather and corrosion resistant. It is automatically controlled and it is equipped with a heating system for preventing freeze damage during the cold season.

The biofilter includes a biological active bed or filling (mixture of crushed husk, peat or similar materials and specific micro-organism) under which several grids are installed to equally distribute the polluted waste gas across it. The pollutants are adsorbed and metabolized by specific micro-organisms’ enzymes into carbon dioxide, water, inorganic salts, biomass and energy.
As the contaminants are decomposed and not just absorbed, the biofilter bed retains no residues from the original organic compounds present in the contaminated air stream. To improve the performance of biofilters, Dekonta provides the DEKONTAM-3© a biopreparation that includes bacterial cells, residual nutrients after fermentation, and a mineral fertilizer.

The entire system was designed to meet stringent legislative requirements and operate with minimal costs. The device's functionality was confirmed after commissioning through accredited emission measurement.
