During the painting process of large-caliber ammunition, volatile substances such as acetone, toluene, butyl acetate, and xylene are released. Due to the high concentration of VOC emissions in the exhaust air, which exceeded the permissible limit of 50 mg/m³, it was necessary to implement a system with a minimum capture efficiency of 70–80%. Biofiltration was selected as the most suitable technology due to its low operating costs, making it an environmentally and economically advantageous solution.
The biofilter uses microorganisms to biologically degrade the pollutants. Contaminated air is directed through a bioactive media made of wood material and fibers, where adsorption and subsequent biodegradation of the organic substances occur. The system also includes a countercurrent air washer that pre-purifies and humidifies the air to the optimal humidity. The entire system was designed to meet stringent legislative requirements and operate with minimal costs. The device's functionality was confirmed after commissioning through accredited emission measurement.
