More about the project

The INCEL site is a former industrial complex with a cellulose factory abandoned in the 1990s, it is located in the city of Banja Luka.

Following a preliminary survey concluded in 2020 that assessed the extent of PCB contamination of the selected “hotspots” and the severity of the PCB contamination effects on the environment and human health, this project involved additional detailed sampling of 7 the most contaminated hotspots of the hotspots identified in the previous study with the aim to prepare Remediation and recultivation design of the former industrial site.

Topsoil samples were collected in the 5x5m grid, at areas with the highest identified contamination per each hotspot additional samples were collected from the depth of up to 3m, to be able to determine both horizontal and vertical spread of PCBs contamination. In total, 595 soil samples were collected. Based on the analyses results, volume of contaminated soil to be excavated was calculated and a Design of remediation and recultivation was prepared. The project also included a preparation of GIS portal with information of the results of sampling campaigns accessible to stakeholders and public.
